What can RomDetective do?

MAME Identification

RomDetective can identify arcade ROMs using CRC32 and SHA-1 against the MAME database.

Bootleg Analysis

Automatically recognizes many bootleg ROMs by applying supported classic transformations, including byte swap, nibble swap, data-line swap, address-line swap, and common ROM layout transformations.

Archives and Results

  • Detects partial matches or split ROMs and shows the percentage of identified coverage.
  • Analyzes multiple ZIP archives while keeping the results of each archive separate.
  • Calculates MAME Candidate Sets independently for each archive.
  • Shows ROM region/type when available, such as CPU, graphics, Z80/audio, and ADPCM.
  • Shows file size, CRC32, SHA-1, MAME ROM name, and transformations used.
  • Automatically runs bootleg analysis when a ROM is not identified directly.

ROMs are analyzed locally in your browser and are never uploaded to the server.

Bootleg analysis is automatic but intentionally limited to the supported transformations. A "not identified" result does not necessarily mean the dump does not belong to a known game.

Bootleg ROM Analyzer runs automatically when direct identification fails. It tries classic data/address swaps and ROM layouts. Up to 2 steps and 5,000 checks per ROM; 32 MB per input and 64 MB retained per batch. The search is bounded, not exhaustive.

ROM data and full hashes stay in your browser. Only database indexes are downloaded from this site. Source: Official MAME XML. Includes systems, devices and BIOS metadata; excludes separate software lists and CHD contents. Limits: 32 MiB per ROM, 256 MiB per ZIP, 512 MiB per upload, 1 GiB uncompressed per upload.

A ROM may belong to multiple sets or clones. Its role is interpreted from the MAME region; unclear roles are marked for interpretation. “Not in database” does not necessarily mean the ROM is faulty.
